It was one of the most unexpected moments of the Grammy Awards 2011: during her acceptance speech for Best Pop Vocal Album, which she won for “The Fame Monster,” Lady Gaga thanked Whitney Houston, out of all people.

The singer took home several awards, including for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Short Form Music Video for “Bad Romance,” as we also noted earlier today.

When she took to the stage for the customary acceptance speech for Best Pop Vocal Album, a teary Gaga thanked the usual crowd, family, friends, collaborators and… Whitney Houston.

Us Magazine reports – and the video embedded at the end of the article will confirm – that Gaga said that Houston had been the inspiration for her recently released single “Born This Way,” the one she calls an anthem to LGBT bullied teens

As such, it was only common sense that she thanked her in her speech.

“I need to thank Whitney Houston,” Gaga said to the cheering of the crowd and, no doubt, to their amazement.

“I wanted to thank Whitney, because when I wrote ‘Born this Way,’ I imagined she was singing it – because I wasn’t secure enough in myself to imagine I was a superstar,” the singer said.

“So, Whitney, I imagined you were singing ‘Born This Way’ when I wrote it,” she added, even though the cue music for her to wrap her speech had already started.

No word yet on how Houston took Gaga’s thanks but, since this is one of the most appreciated pop artists of today, she’ll probably be happy about it.

As we noted earlier today, Gaga also performed at the Grammys 2011: dressed in a revealing latex suit and an oversized hat, she put on an aerobics-inspired show that allowed for the focus to fall on the message of her latest hit, “Born This Way.”
