Publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and developer Monolith Productions have announced that they are working together on the development of a new game called Gotham City Imposters, which will fit into the Batman universe.

The game will be delivered on the Xbox Live service for the Xbox 360, the PSN for the PlayStation 3 and the PC, presumably through Steam, and will be multiplayer focused.

No release date has been mentioned for Gotham City Imposters.

The game will allow the player to be part of teams of Batman and Joker impostors that will fight on the streets of Gotham City.

Gamers will be able to choose their identity and, as they play, they will open up customization options for their Batman or Joker character, including insane costumes, a number of gadgets and weapons.

Samantha Ryan, who is the senior vice president in charge of Production and Development at Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, has stated when the announcement was made, “Gotham City Impostors blows apart expectations for superhero games with an exaggerated take on first person shooters, set in a part of the DC Universe players have never seen before,”

She added, “Monolith is creating a game that turns Gotham City upside down and we think fans are going to have a blast with this creative twist on multiplayer heroism and anti-heroism as they play up the classic rivalry between Batman and The Joker.”

Monolith Productions has so far worked on the F.E.A.R. series, on Condemned, No One Lives Forever and on Matrix Online and has little experience creating multiplayer only games.

Gotham City Imposters has been rumored as being in development at a Warner Bros. owned studio for some time and some have speculated that the game will use mechanics that are similar to those seen in Team Fortress 2 from Valve.
