Mattel dolls from Monster High line send message of acceptance in a world of bullying

What with vampire movies and books literally blowing up these past few years, it’s probably no surprise that Mattel too got in on the action with the line called Monster High. The so-called Goth Barbie is now, 2 years after launch, the second best selling Barbie ever.

The Goth Barbie is second only to the original Barbie and, while Mattel expected it to be a hit, they never imagined it would turn out so successful.

As Christian Post and the photo attached to this article can confirm, the Monster High doll line from Mattel includes dolls made to look like vampires or other undead creatures so popular these days.

They are Frankie Stein, Clawdeen Wolf, Draculaura, Cleo de Nile, Deuce Gorgon, Lagoona Blue, and Ghoulia Yelps.

The dolls are still super slim and super cute but, according to a spokesperson for the makers, they’re also meant to send a message of acceptance in a world where bullying has become a too frequent occurrence.

In movies, they would call girls looking like these Barbies “the freaks.”

Mattel is here to tell girls that “the freaks” are ok.

“The message about the brand is really to celebrate your own freaky flaws, especially as bullying has become such a hot topic. And it’s also one of the fastest growing brands within the entire toy industry,” says a spokesperson for Mattel.

Even so, the success of Monster High has still managed to take the toymaker by surprise.

“Honestly, it was very surprising to us. We just noticed girls were into darker goth fashion,” Kiyomi Kaverly, Mattel’s design vice president, says.

Created by Garrett Sander and illustrated by Kellee Riley, the Monster High line also includes other items, such as “stationery, bags, key chains, video games, and other toys featuring the Monster High characters.”
