Corning builds on prior experience and its proprietary glass composition and fusion

Corning succeeded in creating some new, portable display glass substrates, making it possible to manufacture cheaper LCDs for laptops.

Corning's Eagle XG glass composition and the company's proprietary fusion process is what enabled the creation of Eagle SG Slim.

Eagle SG Slim is currently used in phones, tablets, monitors, notebooks and TVs, but there is a new type that will make the day of ultrabook makers.

0.3 mm in thickness, it measures 1500mm by 1800mm, or roughly five feet by six feet (Generation 6 size rating).

The length and width make it clear that most types of displays can be constructed out of it, but the thinness is what, Corning says, qualifies Generation 6 for ultrabook use. Needless to say, that automatically makes Gen 6 suited to new-generation tablets.

“Emerging mobile applications are driving increased demand for thinner, lighter display panels,” Andrew Beck, product line manager, Corning Display Technologies said. “Our EAGLE XG Slim glass helps panel manufacturers meet this demand in a more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly way.”
