Gordon Ramsay completed the Hawaii Ironman competition last week, also dubbed one of the most grueling triathlons known to man. It took him one year of strict dieting and intense workouts to get in shape for it, he says in a new interview.

The celebrity chef was never out of shape to begin with but, as he points out himself, he was never incredibly fit either. Today, he can say he’s never looked better, even if he’s not exactly feeling good about not being able to eat whatever he wants.

The Daily Mail cites Ramsay as saying he’s living on a diet of vegetables, smoothies, and almonds, and complaining that he looks “like a bloody piece of asparagus” after he’s lost the weight.

Speaking of losing weight, Ramsay has dropped an impressive 28 pounds (12.7 kg) since the new health kick last year and, we assume, built instead more muscle mass.

“Ramsay, 46, allows himself only one cup of coffee every two days – and the milk he takes with it is the only dairy product he uses. He eats oatmeal or muesli in the mornings and favors protein-rich dishes such as poached fish and chicken,” the Mail writes.

“The Hell’s Kitchen star has also been working out three to four days a week under separate coaches in the UK and Los Angeles. His regime includes 70-mile [113 km] cycle rides and 25-mile [40 km] runs, and he has been getting up daily at 4.30am for two-hour swims while shooting his new series in LA,” adds the publication.

Considering that Ramsay overhauled his lifestyle to take part in the Ironman challenge, for which few qualify and which even fewer actually finish, you will see that his efforts were proportionate to the task at hand.

The chef managed to finish the triathlon in the given timeframe, pulling a time of 14 hours, 4 minutes, and 48 seconds.
