Less than 24 hours after Yahoo announced its SMS beta searching, Google decided to launch its own mobile Search service: Google SMS Search, for now only as beta.
The service is available in the US and in UK and even if you are not planning on using the SMS searching, the demos released by Yahoo and Google are interesting enough to allow you to draw some conclusions.
Hereyou will find the Yahoo SMS Search service, and for Google US visit this
address. If you are from the UK, visit this
address.
The
principle is the same. Send one SMS with the keyword you are interested in and you will receive an answer. The only difference is that you'll have to learn certain shortcuts. For example, if you want to find out the meaning of "smart", you'll have to send the following message: "define smart"; sending a message containing just the word "smart" not returning any result for either of the services. Obviously, there is a help service which will send via SMS the shortcuts you'll have to type.
Google SMS Search for USA is the most comprehensive service and it provides local information, phone numbers, driving directions, details on movies, weather, stocks, Q&A service, Google glossary and the Google calculator. Obviously, there are is also information, such as: Area Code and Zip Code. Google SMS Search UK doesn't offer information on movies, weather, stocks, Zip and Area Code.
Yahoo SMS Search also has local information, driving directions, dictionary (the equivalent for Google's glossary), information on weather, stocks, and Area and Zip Code, but it doesn't
Yahoo SMS Search doesn't have an equivalent for Movies, for Froogle and calculator, but does offer horoscope and information on the nearest WiFi hotspots.
The major differences show up when searching. Google SMS Search tries to return results as simple and clear as possible, while Yahoo SMS Search offers many details on a certain keyword.
Considering the various features offered by Google SMS Search, especially the US version, we could say that this service is much more interesting than Yahoo SMS Search.
Finding information on prices and products, the calculator and the Movies feature gives Google SMS Search an edge in the battle for SMS.
