It seems that Google's Android operating system might have already taken down Apple iPhone in terms of activation numbers, though the Cupertino-based company tends to disagree.

According to Google's latest reports, made official last month, it activates more than 200,000 devices a day, and that number is on the rise.

However, Apple says that it can't believe the Android platform is already as popular as Google claims, and says that it is the company with the highest number of activations per day.

At 230,000 iPhones activated each and every day, Apple claims the reign on the smartphone market, while stating that competitors might not be fair what publishing market data.

“We think some of our friends are counting upgrades in their numbers,” Apple's CEO Steve Jobs said recently during a press event, a recent article on Fortune reads.

Clearly aiming at Google with his words, Jobs continued: “we think we are ahead of everyone,” but it seems that he could not have been more wrong that this.

According to Fortune, Google was not late with a response to Apple's claims, and even said that the Android activation numbers might be higher than Apple thinks.

“The Android activation numbers do not include upgrades and are, in fact, only a portion of the Android devices in the market since we only include devices that have Google services,” a Google spokesperson commented.

Since Google's announcement on the activating of 200,000 devices per day was made last month, that number certainly grew more since then, not to mention that updates were not included in the count.

Basically, this shows that the Android operating system might have already outpaced Apple's iPhone, or that it would do so in the very near future.

This does not come as a surprise, that's for sure, especially since Android was already said to be on track to become the second mobile OS on the market in a few years, and since the platform is already available on the market on more than just smartphones.
