The features are coming, but it's hard to know exactly when

Google has been working on Google+ for more than a year now. It boasted that new features were being added all the time and changes made according to feedback. The site's recently gotten a major redesign and so have the mobile apps. But that's not to say there's not a lot more to be done.

In fact, some of the biggest things missing, an app platform for example, are still not here and won't be for a while. But that doesn't mean Google isn't working on them.

A couple of things that Google is definitely working on are an Events and a Local feature. Both were discovered in the source code of the recently updated Android app and both are major components.

When they go live, at least judging by what Google seems to be thinking at the moment, they'll take their place next to the other main sections, the profile, the stream, photos, circles and so on.

This is extracted from the app, but doubtless the same features will be available on the site. The local section is already available, in a way, as the mobile app surfaces public activity that is happening around the location of the user.

That activity is more important to users on the go, so it makes more sense in the app. Google could expand that though and create an even more personalized experience.

The Events feature is an even more obvious addition. Facebook's events section is a popular one and having the feature built into a social network makes a lot of sense.

It's not a crucial feature and since Google+ is positioned somewhere between Facebook, which focuses more on the closer personal relations, and Twitter, which focuses more asymmetrical relationships, an Events section is less important than it is for Facebook.
