Recently, Google was placed on the first position in the 2007 Best Companies to Work For rank because it allows its employees to spend 20 percent of the work time for personal projects so it's obvious that the search giant is continuously developing new ideas. Although many of the Google's services are well-developed and without critical flaws, the company cannot afford to release untested applications because clients might look for a better product with more powerful features. Because the most useful ideas are always coming from the users, the company decided to release Google Code, a special service that presents the latest ideas inside Google, allowing visitors to test new tools.

In the past, Google offered interesting programs that can help your improve your browsing experience or even utilities that enable you to develop new solutions or codes to be included in Google's services.

Today, the company's employees announced that pactester, an application that can test your browser's proxy and its service, is now available as a free download directly from the official website of the service. The program is released under the GNU Lesser Public License and has been tested to work on Linux and Intel Macs.

"I'm pleased to announce that we've just released pactester, a tool to test the proxy auto-configuration (PAC) files used by browsers to identify the correct proxy server for a given URL. Since the PAC file evaluation mechanism is generated inside the browser and cannot be accessed from outside, the only way to tell which proxy your browser will use for a specific URL is manual inspection of the PAC file. Unfortunately, this approach is error prone and quickly becomes impractical for large and complex PAC files. Enter pactester, which resolves this issue by simulating browser behavior," Manu Garg, Google Systems Administrator, said on the official blog.

If you want to download the new application available on the Google Code official website, you can save it directly from the search giant's servers following this link.
