Google has been celebrating Earth Day for quite a while, with doodles of course, and some of the latest drawings were quite spectacular. This time around, Google went with a more low-tech doodle but definitely an interesting one, a time-lapse animation of flowers blooming to form the Google logo.
And, like the Halloween doodle, the time-lapse is made up of photos of actual flowers Google grew for the occasion. The end result is pretty beautiful, but it's also particularly fitting for Earth Day.
Growing the flowers and capturing their progress was a bigger undertaking than you might expect, as doodler Jennifer Hom
recounted. In the end though, the effort was worth it as the resulting doodle is quite interesting.
The doodle is animated, but it's not a GIF, rather Google used a simple JavaScript to hack a large JPG image and display only portions of it at a time, as frames.
