SEO is often considered more black art than science and search engines have their fair share of blame for this since many website owners and SEO experts are many times guessing at what will work and what won't to get a site moving up the rankings.

This general lack of information has made it possible for shady, but many times not very effective, people to come up with various schemes to improve search engine ranking.

So there is a general feeling of mistrust around SEO and a general misconception that it is somehow wrong, that it's gaming the system and that Google doesn't like it.

Google's Matt Cutts, in the latest Webmaster YouTube video, explains that Google loves SEO, specifically, 'white hat' SEO, and that it's actually helpful to the search engine, in that it ensures that websites present their information in the best possible way.
