The panel in charge of implementing a WiFi network in San Francisco has decided that Google and EarthLink are the right team for the job.
According to a statement cited by Reuters, the Google-EarthLink offer was chosen over other five, including one
from MetroFi, which already covers Sunnyvale, Cupertino and Santa Clara.
The San Francisco WiFi network will consist of devices supplied by Motorola Inc. and Tropos Networks and will offer services to San Francisco residents, businesses, local government and visitors.
Arstechnica writes that around 1,500 transmitters will be installed in lighting poles and will cover around 90% of San Francisco. EarthLink and Google will share the hardware and installing costs equally, and the EarthLink will handle the network.
It seem that EarthLink will be in charge of the business segment, with $20 per month subscriptions, which will give users bandwidths of 1Mbps and an ad-free Internet experience, and Google will offer free 300Kbps ad-abundant connections.
