Google is expected to unveil its latest Nexus 8 tablet at its I/O conference that will be taking place soon. But according to a new report, the search giant might have a lot more to share with us in terms of tablets.

The Wall Street Journal brings us information that Google is planning to expand the recently announced Project Tango in order to develop a tablet with 3D vision capabilities.

For those who don’t know, Project Tango was announced back in February and is an endeavor that aims to make mobile devices capable of perceiving their surroundings in 3D like humans do.

So far the company has been working on a smartphone with a 5-inch display, but now it appears we’ll be seeing a tablet added to the roll.

Google demonstrated back in February that is plans to equip smartphones with the ability to do realistic 3D mapping and create virtual experiences as the phone’s owner moves through the environment.

The phone’s sensor suite enable the device to swiftly make over a quarter million 3D measurements every single second, in order to provide real-time feedback concerning position and orientation, information used to construct an accurate 3D model of the space.

The new report goes on to specify the slate will arrive with a 7-inch screen and will boast two back cameras, infrared depth sensor and an advanced kind of software capable of capturing three-dimensional images of objects.

Even if the Project Tango project is far from being a mainstream product, we could easily envision its possible applications.

For example, future users could use the device to scan the dimensions of a particular room before going furniture shopping. More exciting applications would include turning a space into a virtual reality game-space.

Currently, Google is planning to offer a limited number of its 3D tablets (4,000 prototype models) to developers so they can start building an app ecosystem for them.

Other details about the new tablet were not made available for the time being, but hopefully we’re going to be seeing Google make a more detailed presentation at the I/O 2014 developer event.

In related news, Google appears to be working on a laptop that comes with a smartphone to it. The tech giant has filed a patent for the invention, so even if this doesn't absolutely mean we’re going to see the notebook arrive in retail, we can see the tech giant is looking to bring innovation to its future products.
