It seems that Google has big plans when it comes to the mobile phone market and its mobile services. As many of you might already know, the company has recently relaunched GrandCentral under a new name and with a new face, Google Voice. According to the latest news on the Web, the service would be able to change the way subscribers currently make use of their phone number.

It seems that the search engine has plans to allow users to port their current phone number into the Google Voice service. For the time being, it is not certain when Google will come up with this feature for its service, but it seems that its help page suggests that this could become reality at a certain point in the future, something that would make the transition to Google Voice even easier.

What Google's number-porting support will be all about is that it will allow users to make a transition to Google Voice with the current number they own, eliminating this way the need for a second phone number to be remembered and spread around.

It's a common fact that the company already allows users to take their Google Voice phone number to different carriers, in case one would like to make the move, and it is somehow expected to hear that Google will offer support for future number ports. In addition, this would be the last step in bringing down the adoption barrier, knowing that the service is expected to be capable of delivering a full-featured web-based interface.

As stated above, we might see Google turning number porting into reality, but we might as well not. For what it's worth, it seems that the company is asking for feedback from users to see whether they consider number porting a worthwhile investment. Those of you who would like to say a word in the matter can do so here.
