Calls to the rest of the world are offered at low rates

Great news just arrived for the users of Google Voice in the United States and Canada. Next year, they will be able to benefit from free calling on the North American continent.

Last year, the Mountain View-based Internet giant said that the free calls within the United States and Canada were supposed to be free only throughout 2011, but it appears that it changed its mind.

For the time being, however, the company did not offer specific info on why the promotional period was extended.

“As the holiday season approaches, we're happy to announce that we've extended free domestic calls within the US and Canada for 2012,” Vincent Paquet, group product manager, said.

“This is our way of helping you connect with friends and family across the country. And you can still call the rest of the world from Gmail at our insanely low rates.”

Google created Voice after acquiring GrandCentral in 2007, and is expected to enhance it with VoIP capabilities too, following the purchase of Gizmo5 in 2009.
