After hitting the iTunes, Jon Johansen, a.k.a. DVD Jon, strikes again. This time the victim is Google Video Viewer, a program launched by Google for viewing the video clips found by means of Google Video Search.
The program was working only on Google's servers, and wasn't compatible with the video content found in other sources.
This
is the short version of DVD Jon's latest deed. Now, what's to be learned from this story?
First of all, Google is doing the right thing when it launches its services initially in beta version, in order to prevent the possible problems these types of incidents could cause in the case of a final service. For DVD Jon this is yet another trophy added to his impressive collection of DVD-related hacking adventures.
Besides this, the whole story with Google and DVD Jon proves just how fragile an online video content distribution service might be. The people who want an iTunes for movies or something similar now have solid proofs of the difficulties the companies that would attempt to launch such a service might face.
So, there might be a demand, but the offer is far from ready, and we'll have to wait some more before seeing an iTunes for movies.
