It seems that all companies are going mad about patent infringement breaches and everybody is suing everybody lately. And the bigger the names involved the better for media attention and the higher the claimed prejudice.
This time, it's Google's turn to face the facts.
Apparently, the music and the tune were written
by an obscure company headquartered in New York. Rates Technology is a small company which doesn't exactly produce anything tangible other than patents for a number of technologies, products and so on.
Rates Technology sued Google over features included in the Google Talk application, which Rates Technology claims has patents for. Anyhow, this matter has been blown way out of proportion by some people since the prejudice that Rates claims Google Talk inflicted is of 5 billion dollars. Still out of the goodness of their hearts, Rates Technology representatives said they usually negotiate a solution favorable for both parties, which in this case means that Google should pay damages up to 5 millions dollars.
And things are about to get worse for other top companies as well, since Rates Technology claims it owns patents for most of the VoIP technology and thus is now negotiating with AOL and eBay/Skype.
I believe it's pretty obvious what kind of activity do Rates Technology perform.
