The new mobile site is a major improvement, but apps are still better

While the mobile world may be all about the apps, the web is still important, in fact, it's increasingly important. Hopefully, the web will prevail on mobile devices eventually and Google is doing its part in this respect. It has now debuted a new Google+ website for mobiles, phones and tablets.

The new Google+ website for Android, iOS and Blackberry 7 is a bit cleaner than before, it's more "app-like" and is also available in all the languages the main site is available, all 60 of them.

"Keeping up with Google+ on the go just got easier. We launched a newer, cleaner design of the Google+ experience for mobile web and support for 60 locales. Now it is easier to find, enjoy, and share the content you care about in Bengali, Icelandic, Swahili and more!," Google announced.

The layout, unsurprisingly, is a better fit for mobile devices, you get three parallel streams by default with stuff from your circles, nearby people - if you enable the location feature, or things from the What's Hot section.

All the major sections are easily accessible as well, the stream, Photos, Circles, Profile and so on. The site still feels a bit spartan, compared to the app and a bit lacking in "sparkly" bits, but it's rather polished.

Of course, if you find yourself using Google+ on the go, or in your bed, quite often, you're still better off with the official app. But if you're on an iPad the website is the only option, so the updated version should come in rather handy. Of course, Android tablets don't have it any better either.

Given that Facebook only introduced an iPad app some six months ago and that Google+ has only been around for some eight months, tablet users shouldn't be that disappointed. Still, Google has been throwing a lot of resources at Google+ and has tens of thousands of engineers.
