Google has announced that it will sponsor one deserving female hacker to attend the Hack in the Box 2011 Amsterdam Conference, with Google providing the admission fee and travel expenses. This is part of Google's continuous efforts to get more people involved with Computer Science and sponsor research in the field.

Google is first and foremost an engineering company and has always put technical prowess above anything else.

It's also looking to hire the most talented people, and lots of them, so it's understandable that it is involved in several projects trying to broaden the appeal of science and technology in particular.

There's always been an imbalance between the genders in technology, women are far and few between in engineering and this is true for computer science as well.

"As part of Google’s ongoing commitment to encouraging women to excel in computing and technology, Google is pleased to announce the HITB2011AMS Conference Grant," Google said.

"This grant is set up to enable more female computer scientists to attend and participate in HITB2011AMS. The grant includes a pass to the conference on 19th and 20th of May (accommodation not included) & travel expenses up to EUR500! We encourage all female hackers and computer scientists to apply," it explained.

Google is a Bronze Sponsor of Hack in the Box 2011 Amsterdam Conference. The company will provide one female hacker with a two day pass, the length of the entire conference, along with some travel expenses. There are several criteria for being considered for the grant.

The first one is rather obvious, you have to be a women and be involved with Computer Science, either working in the field or studying. You also have to prove your worth via academic achievements and "demonstrated leadership ability." Of course, being able to be in Amsterdam for the conference, on the 19th and 20th of May, is also a must.
