For a while last year, Google started trying to do anything and everything to see what sticks. It had a dedicated team, Slide, which seemed to be pushing new mobile apps every few weeks, things like Photovine, Disco or Pool Party.
All of the apps pushed by the Slide team got killed
off as Google shifted focus on fewer products.
One thing that survived though was Prizes.org, a social site that encouraged users to solve other people's problems for money. That doesn't sound like a half-bad idea, which is probably why Google kept it going. But it seems that it didn't really work out as Prizes.org is getting shut down in the next few months.
"We wanted to take a moment to thank our Prizes community for all of your support and provide a product update. Over the next six months, we will be retiring the Prizes.org product. By January 31, 2013, Prizes.org across platforms--on the web, Android or iOS--will no longer be supported," Google announced in a blog post
