Or even more, on request

Google has just announced the launch of a clever office tool - a box that can store and index by itself up to an astonishing number of 10 million documents or even more, upon request. The new Google Search Appliance is conceived as a handy tool that can help organizations give up on the impractical solutions they have been using to index and search through internal documents so far.

In case a company or an organization had a large amount of content to store, the only solution was, until now, to use servers. As Google explains, sometimes, 10 or more servers are required to handle large data volumes. This implies, of course, besides software and hardware costs, hiring more employees to manage the servers. Google has thus come up with the idea for the magical yellow box that will come to the aid of the companies for which digging through mountains of information has become a burden.

The giant is offering clients the possibility to choose from several custom configurations. They can opt for the basic version, with a capacity of 500,000 documents, or go up to 30 millions, this being the maximum configuration that can be acquired without filing a specific request.

With Google Search Appliance, organizations can have quick access to any type of document in their database. Network administrators can adjust the search results in such manner that they increase their chances of corresponding to what a human resources employee or an engineer expects to receive after a query. Also, the appliance has multi-language support, with the administrative tools being translated in several languages and contextual spell check being available for users in many countries.

"It is now easier than ever for companies to give all employees a Google.com search experience inside their business," says Dave Girouard, president of Enterprise for Google. "With the improved architecture for the search appliance, businesses can provide secure search across the largest enterprise content repositories - such as Documentum, Filenet, LiveLink, and Sharepoint - all from one easy-to-maintain appliance." he added, underscoring the advantages of the new product.
