Google is celebrating the work of cartoonist Winsor McCay with a very nice animated doodle inspired by his Little Nemo in Slumberland comic. The doodle takes you through the adventures of Little Nemo, step by step, drawn out in a comic book format.

It's interesting that Google not only chose the comic book format, but also added some animation in the panels and between them, as McCay was also a noted animator, one of the earliest, his work having pioneered the then-newly-formed medium.

His Little Nemo series was popular in its days, at around the turn of the 20th century, and he was one of the few cartoonists to feature a fantasy setting.

In animation, he is best remembered for Gertie the Dinosaur, which is considered the first cartoon character created specifically for animation.

Today would have been McCay's 107th birthday. You can check out the doodle on the Google homepage, to see the full animation.
