Google's Product Search just got a revamp, but it looks like the company wants to dig deeper and is launching its own e-commerce site focused on designer clothing and similar fashion items. The company has sent an invitation to a number of fashion bloggers to an event a couple of days from now.

The invitation just says "High tech fuses with high fashion." While the official info is scarce at best, some have managed to gather more details.

Apparently, Google plans to open up an e-commerce hub, at Boutique.com, which will carry products from the biggest names in fashion. Each brand and designer will get their own 'boutique.'

Along with the branded stores, shoppers will also be able to visit themed boutiques which will sell items curated by high profile fashion bloggers or in the style certain celebrities.

The Boutique.com domain is registered to Like.com, an e-commerce site which relies on its visual search technology to match products to what the users would want to buy. Like.com was acquired by Google last summer, of course. Boutique.com is currently password-protected.

The rumor is that Google wants to better compete with the likes of eBay and Amazon in the potentially very lucrative e-commerce market.

eBay in particular has been active in the space with eBay Fashion which focuses on designer items.

Google has shied away from getting involved in e-commerce or even from selling anything directly to customers, but as the company grows, it's looking to diversify its business.

An e-commerce outlet powered by Google search technologies and all the data it has amassed about trends, searches, prices and so on could have a big competitive advantage.

Google has just announced a revamped Product Search. There was no mention of any sort of direct sales component, so we'll have to wait until Wednesday to see what Google has in store.
