The new update does nothing but break things

The Nexus 9 might be a popular tablet and customers are flocking to get their hands on one, but the slate is already plagued by a bunch of problems. Which is quite a bummer especially since it is marketed as a premium tablet set to be sold with a price-tag on par with the iPad Air 2.

We’ll start with the most recent. The Nexus 9 might have shipped with Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box, but that doesn’t mean Google is going to leave it alone. Not for now anyway.

Google is offering a new update for the Nexus 9

The company has already rolled out an OTA update for the Nexus 9, which bumps things up to the new build LRX21Q. Sadly, this new update proves to be quite futile.

Folks that have already updated to the new build are reporting on the xda-developers forums (and probably in other locations as well) stumbling upon an error message in recovery.

It’s not such a big deal. After the error message pops up, the tablet will reboot back to the original LRX21L and things will continue rolling on track.

For example, user KinetiClutch writes the following on the board:

“I'm stock not rooted and locked bootloader. Got the OTA pushed too me for the update to 5.0 (LRX21Q). However, after clicking install the device booted to the Android on it's back and the error exclamation mark.”

“Presuming this is the issue with the old recovery not being updated with the previous update. The device after a while re-boots back on 5.0 (LRX21L). Will it be likely google will just re-release a working update? Or should I go through the manual flashing process.”

You can unlock and manually apply the latest firmware, but take into consideration that you will lose everything in the process, or you can wait for Google to roll out another update to fix this problem.

For the time being you best stay away from the new Nexus 9 update

Until now Google has been quiet on the matter, but we expect the search giant to come out and say something about the troubles soon enough. Or maybe it will just unleash another OTA update.

This is a software-related issue, but the Nexus 9 seems to be plagued by hardware problems too. Users have been complaining that the tablet’s backlit display produces a halo effect which is quite evident around the edges. This is best viewable when playing scenes on a dark background.

On top of that, the slate makes annoying, repeating click sounds that come through the speakers. This might be acceptable for a budget Android tablet, but not for a premium tablet such as the Nexus 9.
