One of the latest novelties in the smartphone applications space is represented by the latest flavor of Google Maps for mobile, which reached version 4.0 now. It seems that not only users of an Android-based handset can enjoy the new iteration of the application, but iPhone, Symbian and Windows Mobile users can enjoy it too, with all the novelties that the solution brings along.

Some of you might have learned already that Google released Google Maps 3.4 for Android smartphones last week, when it enabled United States users to taste one new feature with the applications, namely pinch-and-zoom. The solution, first arrived on Nexus One, was said to be a nice addition to DROID, and now it has reached version 4.0 for all Android phone owners out there, as well as for others.

The main new feature of Google Maps 4.0 is the addition of Google Buzz as a layer on the application. The new solution seems to be Google's approach towards social networking, with the only mention that it is focused a lot on location. Users can post public buzz directly from the layer in Google Maps, so as to share their thoughts on various places they visit.

In addition, the new flavor of Google Maps also comes around with the possibility to synchronize starring and personalized suggestions, and there is also a night mode for Google Maps Navigation, at least when Android phone users are involved.

One thing that should be mentioned here is that the new Google Maps 4.0 comes to all Android smartphones running under Android 1.6/Donut or Android 2.0/Android 2.0.1/Eclair, but not for those based on Android 1.5/Cupcake and Android 1.0, as the unwired notes.

Those who would like to try out the new Google Maps 4.0 on their Android, iPhone, Symbian, or Windows Mobile handset can do so by heading over to m.google.com/maps via the browser on their mobile phones. Android users will also find the solution available for download via the Android Market.
