The week that is slowly getting to an end will not be easily forgotten by those who were in southern US and experienced firsthand the effects of a tornado. In order to help other understand the gravity of the situation, Google has released a set of maps displaying before and after imagery of the area.

Unfortunately for those living in the affected areas, they have been struck not by one, but by several tornadoes that caused massive damage.

It has been reported that more than 340 people have died, while thousands have been injured or got homeless, with no electricity or clean drinking water.

Needless to say, these persons need help, and Google has released these maps with the hope that they “will be useful to first responders and the general public.”

In a post on their Lat Long Blog, Google representative explain that they obtained the respective images following their cooperation with their satellite partner GeoEye.

The maps have been included in a dedicated Picasa album and have been organized to provide accessible comparison of the before and after areas.

Some the available images display the very clear mark left by the tornado in various regions, as well as the effect it has on the areas.

In addition to the damages, Google has also included locations of the Red Cross shelters in the vicinity where first aid care can be provided or donations can be received.

Another way to access the newly-released imagery is by performing a simple Google Maps search that will display various dedicated maps.

Moreover, Google will also include a special alert message (see the screenshot attached on the left side of the article) that links to a multi-layered map.

As they did in the past, Mountain View-based company will keep users up-to-date with relevant imagery and information regarding all those affected by this phenomenon.
