The tablet can be purchased off the Google Play Store

After having initially offered its experimental Project Tango tablet to developers for $1,024 / €750, Google has slashed the pricing in April by half.

And today, as we’re waiting for Google to make some major announcements at its I/O 2015 keynote, we get word that Project Tango has become officially available for purchase for anyone with an interest in the experiment, invite-free for $512 / €469 a pop. You can pick one up from the Google Play store.

Even so, with this product, Google is still targeting developers who are expected to start adding some functionality to it.

To give you a taste of these possibilities, think of Space Sketchr. In raw terms, Space Sketchr is a drawing app that lets users pick out colors, brushes and patterns. But it can do more than that.

Since Tango is capable of tracking the moving pattern of the tablet through 3D space thanks to its motion-tracking camera, it can “sense” where you are drawing a line. It can also record these movements and translate them into 3D drawings.

It’s interesting that Google decided to drop the invitation-based purchase system just a few hours before I/O 2015 kick starts.

Could it be that the search giant is looking to introduce Project Tango 2 during the event? It might make sense, given the fact that this year Google is expected to launch two new Nexus smartphones, one made by LG and the other by Huawei, but no Nexus tablet. We’ll just have to wait and see.
