The Google Page Creator service won't have the chance to make it to the Google Apps, because the company is planning to completely replace it with its new Google Sites. In preparation for this, sign-up for the Google Page Creator has already been closed, while an announcement on the home page of the project notifies users that "Google Page Creator is no longer accepting new sign-ups."

Google Page Creator has been part of Google Labs for a while now, providing users who lacked programming skills with the tools to create feature-rich websites. Due to the fact that the new Google Sites offers most of the features and tools Page Creator did, it looks like the project will be entirely replaced - as it was also pointed out in the announcement, "we have shifted our focus to developing Google Sites, which offers many of the capabilities of Page Creator." Google Sites also offers new features like "site-level navigation, site-level headers, control over who can see and edit your site, and rich embeddings like calendars, videos, and Google docs."

For now, if you happen to have a Page Creator account, there is no cause for alarm, as this change only affects new sign-ups. You can still use your account and your data won't be deleted, instead, it will be automatically transitioned to the new Google Sites service later this year. However, you might want to get a head start and move your information over at Google Sites but, in this case, you will have to do it manually, as there is no automatic way to do it at this point.

As for those who prefer to wait for the automatic transition, not much information is available regarding how exactly this will work, except for Google's commitment that it will be as "smooth and easy as possible." Users have already expressed concern about what will happen with the URL structure that differs on Google Sites. This could affect links from external sites to googlepages stored information. How this will be handled remains to be seen, the announcement mentioning only that "we will post more details as we get closer to the transition time."

Google Sites has its attractions, one of them also being the new feature that allows users to create and maintain Wikis. Nevertheless, there are things you will most likely miss, like the ability to upload externally created HTML pages.
