Google rolled out its Android Wear platform last year, but for now, the smartwatch software is compatible only with devices running Android 4.2 or later.

However, as some of you might remember, Google never actually ruled out the possibility of expanding Android Wear’s reach to other platforms.

In an interesting twist of events, a report coming from the The Verge already claims that Google is “close to finishing” the final technical details for the Android Wear smartwatch companion app for the iPhone.

We consider this turn of events quite interesting because Apple has just begun its Watch pre-order/preview campaign.

Android Wear could soon attack Apple Watch sales

So if the information proves to be real, Google will soon be making available Android Wear devices to iOS fans, thus positioning the platform as a direct threat to Apple’s first wearable.

But after Google finishes the development of the iOS Android Wear app, Apple will have to give the green light for the application to actually land in the App Store.

The report cites sources familiar with the matter saying that the Android Wear app for iPhone can currently support basic functionalities such as notifications.

We’re also given a glimpse of the LG G Watch R that is powered by Android Wear, but on the watch face you can spot a clear FaceTime notification from an iOS device.

The Android Wear app for iOS handles basic tasks for now

Furthermore, we’re being told that the iPhone Android Wear app supports Google Now features such as cards, voice search and other commands characteristic to the Android platform.

However, it seems that other features will be coming soon, like the ability to reply to Gmail messages and other such things.

Apple and Google were both contacted to make a statement on the matter, but the former declined to say anything related to this subject, while the latter said it “had nothing to announce at this time.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve been hearing Google is working on bringing Android Wear support on the iOS environment.

Some time ago, it was suggested that the search giant might be looking to announce the convergence of Android Wear with iPhone and iPad devices at the Google I/O 2015 in late May. We’ll just have to wait and see if this turns out to be the case.
