Some Android icons will look like those for the web, but with slight modifications

It looks like Google plans to redux all its services and app icons, which are included in the Android operating system. Most of you know that Google uses different icons for its services and apps on Web and Android, respectively.

Word has it that the search giant plans to unify its icons system and make the Android ones look like those available on the Web. Well, for the most part they will look similar, but we’re not sure what the final version of these icons will look like.

The folks over at AndroidPolice claim that they have been informed by a source familiar with the new designs that the following icons will be redesigned in the next version of Android: Play Music, Books, Movies, and Games, alongside Google+, Calendar, People, Chrome, YouTube, Maps, Gmail, Hangouts, Camera, and the Play store.

The icons that appear in the screenshots embedded in this article are mockups, but the source of the rumor claims that these are the proposed icons that should be part of the next version of the Android operating system.

Given the fact that there’re still a long way until Google launches another major update for Android, the final version of these icons may look entirely different.

The stage of the design process that these mockup icons were at the time of the leak is unclear, so they may have been changed in the meantime, but at least we now have an idea of what Google plans for Android enthusiasts.

As we can see in the screenshots, the new icons are brighter and slightly flatter in comparison with the current ones. Flat seems to be the trend these days, so it comes as no surprise that Google will embrace the new design for its own mobile platform.

The new style that Google wishes to breathe into its icons is internally known as “Moonshine” and besides the flatter look, it will also add some “long, hard shadows behind prominent elements.”

Following the change in icon design, Google will certainly update the existing guidelines with specific instructions on how to design a new launcher icon for Android.

Although the new leak suggests that the new changes may be applied when Google releases a new version of Android, there’s a slight chance that they will be pushed as an intermediary update in the next few months. We will keep an eye out for any additional details, so stay tuned for more updates on the matter.
