Months after it was leaked, the feature is finally here

Back in May, there was a leak from Google which unveiled its new Chrome bookmarking system called unofficially called Stars. The company wasn’t done tinkering with it then, so the app hasn’t been officially available on the Chrome App Store until now.

Downloading the extension will completely replace the old bookmarks interface in Chrome, so you’ll have to keep that in mind when installing. Of course, trading in the bland, often difficult to handle interface for the new one isn’t that much of a leap since the bookmarking system is one of the worst parts of the Chrome web browser.

“Chrome Bookmarks and the Bookmarks Manager are now more powerful by incorporating the smarts of Google Search with a new modern UI,” the app’s presentation starts off.

Once you have the tool installed and you’re signed in to Chrome with sync enabled, you’ll be able to save your bookmarks with a single click. It’s even possible to attach pictures and notes to make these bookmarks even more helpful, which will appear on top of the page’s title and so on.

The extension will retroactively add images and description to your older bookmarks, while newer ones will also get the automated version, but you’ll be able to edit them before you click save.

Search not only through names and descriptions, but through content too

Stars allows users to use search powered by Google to find an elusive page among the tons of bookmarks, looking not only in the bookmark title and snippet, but also through the page’s content.

The Chrome Stars tool provides users with a simple way not only to put everything down in folders, but also to get access to an automated system that organizes bookmarks by topic. You can, of course, keep organizing them into folders by yourself, which is now as easy as dragging and dropping them into that particular folder.

While this was possible before, it is now a much more visually-appealing experience and makes selecting the bookmarks that much easier.

Stars will give you access to your bookmarks anywhere. So, if you’re logged into your Google account while on your phone, for example, and use Chrome, bookmarking an article while commuting to work will allow you to continue reading when you get to your computer. Basically, Chrome will continue to sync your bookmarks across all devices, just like it does today.

The app also allows you to share the bookmark folders you created with the public. Once you click on the “Share this folder” button, you’ll be able to set the folder’s visibility to public. You’ll then get a shareable link.
