Google News Introduces Its First Major Redesign

Google News has just gotten its first major redesign since being introduced in 2002. No wonder then that the new design has been in testing for months, as Google tweaked and adjusted the features and layout to get it just right. There are a couple of main themes throughout the new Google News, more personalization, the site aims to find more stories that are of interest to you, and more sharing.

“Today we’re revamping the Google News homepage with several changes designed to make the news that you see more relevant to you. We’re also trying to better highlight interesting stories you didn’t know existed and to make it easier for you to share stories through social networks,” Google engineer Kevin Stolt introduced the revamped site.

Visitors will still be able to recognize the site and the changes may not even be that obvious to those that don’t frequently use Google News. But, once you dive in, you’ll realize that this is a thorough redesign.

The News Stream

Google News replaces the focus on sections with a single ‘news stream’ that takes up most of the page. The concept is somewhat similar to what Twitter, Facebook and others are doing and, since these two sites are quickly replacing the need for dedicated news aggregators, it’s probably a good idea to borrow a thing or two from them.

The stream is split into two sections, Top Stories and “News for you.” The Top Stories are the entries shown to all visitors to Google News and, as the name implies, are the top news stories of the moment. The second section is where you’ll probably be spending much of your time, though, as the stories are especially catered to your interests.

Personalized news and Trending Topics

The first time you’ll visit the revamped Google News you’ll be prompted to rank your interests in the main topics, World, Business, Sci/Tech and so on. If you had customized sections setup, these will also be listed along with the possibility to remove them. After you’re done, Google News will retrieve only the stories it believes are relevant to you in the personalized section.

Another interesting new feature is the Trending Topics section which, much like its Twitter namesake, highlights the hottest topics of the moment based on what the news organizations are writing about.

New sharing options and more/less stories from a source

Google News finally gets some real sharing options. Until now, the only choice was email, which may have worked in 2002, but in the highly connected web of 2010, it feels antiquated. If you find a story you like, you can share it with your friends via email, Google Reader, Facebook, Twitter and Google Buzz.

In the same drop-down menu you’ll also notice a interesting addition, the possibility to see more or less stories from that particular source. This affects how Google will rank the stories it recommends to you in the future.

There are plenty of other small features and tweaks and it may take a while for you to discover them. Overall, it’s a welcomed revamp which brings a couple of features that were sorely needed. If this will help Google News stay relevant when most people now get their news from their friends remains to be seen, but it’s a step in the right direction.

The redesign is as pitiful as this article is. Stockholder much?

And Google has completed the Moron Trifecta for 2010!

1) Buzz forced on all GMail users, without a working opt-out button.
2) Pictures on the homepage forced on all users, without a working opt-out button.
3) New Google News format, roundly panned by testers, forced on all users, without a working opt-out button.

Remember when Google was sane and intelligent? You know, 1996-2009?

The revamped Google News format reminds me of the old story about the new Ford Edsel, which was named after Ford's son as an honor -- that is, until it deservedly flopped. The car was supposedly the first "designed-by-computer" prototype that had incorporated all of the best ideas of other cars. Edsel suddenly had his name synonymous with poor quality. Thanks Dad...

Sound familiar, Google News users?

Better luck next time, Google.

the redesign is horrible and I am unable to even visit news.google.com until they've fixed it. I spent several hours yesterday trying to figure out a way to go back to the normal version but that's apparently impossible.

After setting Google News as my home page since its inception, I changed to Bing News yesterday. No going back to the new Google News format... it's horrible.

Using Google News, my searches were with Google. With Bing News, the searches will be with Bing. Your change of Google News - Mr. Google - will now impact your income on searches, at least from my PCs.

I don't like the new Google News layout. Google, please change it back! I had Google News as my home page for my PS3's browser. Now, with the new layout, I am getting Java Script errors and my PS3 is locking up. Argh!

Google, don't screw up a good thing.

The Google News redesign is horrible and Google has heard from users about it. Unfortunately, they are ignoring their readers and many are now moving on. Just one more tech company who failed to listen to their consumers and will now begin the slow descent to irrelevance.

I am open to change but hate this site more than anything I have ever had to deal with on my computer before. Every single aspect of the change, the forced componenets that I don't want, the removing of sections. It is almost as bad as the press release journalism of people writing articles without researching what people think. Shameful lazy reporting on your behalf. Go to the Google News redesign website and see what people think and then write a proper report http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/news/label?lid=06c20bed07a04da6&hl=en

To put it bluntly...peeeeewwwww! An obvious statement from Google that they do not care about those who support their site...WE ARE GOOGLE - TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT!!! Thank you very much...I'm leaving it...

The new Google News really, really sucks. It is a pain. I just go to the Canadian or Mexican Google news pages, which so far they have left alone. Why did they have to ruin something was working fine, and replace it with something less useful?
