Google May Be Worried About Bing After All

A new report has Google co-founder Sergey Brin leading a team assembled to analyze Bing

Bing is doing something right as it has gotten mostly positive reviews from a skeptic media and gained a slight increase in market share for Microsoft. In fact, if we are to believe a report by the New York Post, the engine is proving so successful that it’s got Google scared, despite sounding quite confident in previous public statements. Apparently, the search giant has created a small team of its best engineers under the
direct leadership of co-founder Sergey Brin.

Supposedly the team was assembled to investigate and attempt to better understand how Bing's new search algorithm differs from Google's. If the report is accurate it would be an unusual move as the company's co-founder rarely gets involved at this level in Google projects these days. "New search engines have come and gone in the past 10 years, but Bing seems to be of particular interest to Sergey," wrote the New York Post, citing an inside source.

The Mountain View-based company, as expected, didn't comment on the speculation but did specify that the search engine was always getting improvements. "We always have a team working on improving search." a Google spokesman said. "We dedicate more time and energy to search than anything else in our company. Our algorithm is constantly evolving."

Of course, while the story may be exaggerated, it is in fact likely that Google has been analyzing Microsoft's new search engine, as it does with any competitor, especially one the size of Bing, though maybe not under the direct supervision of Sergey Brin. An example of this is the recent Google Squared, a new structured data search engine from Google, launched just weeks after Wolfram Alpha showed up on the scene with the short time between the release of the two products likely more than just a coincidence.
