Google Maps is a very popular application on mobile phones, and the latest milestone that the software has achieved on Android confirms it.

The application has been downloaded and installed over 1 billion times, which makes it one of the most wanted pieces of software on Google’s mobile operating system, after Gmail, which reached the mark last month.

However, as Android Police points out, what’s interesting to note about the number of downloads is that each of them represents a different user account.

Basically, even if a user downloads the application multiple times, only the first download is taken into consideration. Moreover, this also means that there are over 1 billion accounts on Android devices out there that have downloaded the mobile application at least once.

Google Maps has always proved a highly popular piece of software on Android devices, as it was the very first app on the platform to have reached 50 million downloads.

And since Maps were present on Android right from the start, it’s no surprise that people were attracted to it, since it provided them with great navigation capabilities, something that many other mobile platforms out there did not have.

Google Maps for Android has certainly come a long way, and we’re not referring here only to the impressive number of downloads that it has registered so far, but also to the great deal of enhancements that it has seen over time.

At the moment, the application can provide users with features such as 3D maps, indoor coverage, walking directions, transit schedules, and much more.

The latest update to the application was delivered on June 12, putting search results right on the map, with descriptions, which should help users make choices quickly.

The Transit results in the app now show total walking time of user’s trip and the next scheduled bus or train, while accessing Terrain view from the side menu will provide users with a 3D view of the landscape and elevation.

The application comes with accurate maps in 220 countries and territories, while also providing users with voice-guided GPS navigation for driving, biking, and walking, along with Transit directions and maps for over 15,000 towns and cities.

“The Google Maps app for Android phones and tablets makes navigating your world faster and easier. Find the best spots in town and the information you need to get there,” the application’s description reads.
