A new flavor of the Google Maps for Android application is now available for download, with new features related to public transportation available for users.

The app now offers schedules for over one million transit stops, in around 500 cities around the world, such as New York, London, Tokyo and Sydney.

These resources are available for millions of users interested in traveling by bus, train, subway or tram, courtesy of Google’s collaboration with hundreds of transit authorities worldwide.

The new Google Maps for Android app (version 6.10) was meant to make the transit information available for users far more useful than before.

“We’ve made some changes to the Transit Lines layer, so that you can select a specific mode of public transportation (train, bus, tram or subway) to display on the mobile map, hiding the other modes. This is helpful in areas where there is a tight concentration of several types of public transit,” Google explains.

Additionally, the latest flavor of the mobile application comes with a new layout for the station pages, also meant to prove more useful than before. The page can be opened through tapping the name of the station on your mobile map.

Some other enhancements are also available for Android users, such as updated region highlighting, along with the My Places and Location History displays in the application.

Following the update, users will see highlighted borders of a region every time they search for a city or postal code, Google explains.

Other improvements include:

Under My Places you’ll notice we’ve added new tabs, which will help you access all your information from a single place; from your saved maps for use offline to your starred places and Custom Maps created on your desktop.

If you enable Location History, you’ll be able to browse the places you’ve been on a daily basis with an updated Location History dashboard. Google Maps for Android 6.1 is now available for download via the Google Play store for all those users interested in getting comprehensive, accurate and useful transit information in the palm of their hands.
