With Google Maps, you can travel all around the world and see the most remote places in great detail, thanks to satellite imagery, Street View and everything in between. Yet, there were still some places that felt barren, like North Korea. No more, Google has now revealed a greatly improved map of North Korea thanks to contributions from volunteers.
"For a long time, one of the largest places with limited map data has been North Korea. But today we are changing that with the addition of more detailed maps of North Korea in Google Maps," Google explained.
"To build this map, a community of citizen cartographers came together in Google Map Maker to make their contributions such as adding road names and points of interest," it added.
The project has been undergoing for years but, as you can imagine, progress has been slow.
There's little access to data to base the map on, those in North Korea don't have internet access and probably don't even know what it is, and tourists have other things to worry about than mapping the country.
Still, little by little, pieces of the puzzle were added until Google was confident enough in the data to publish it on the main site.
