It’s pretty common knowledge that the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live, the first Android Wear smartwatches, have arrived among us.

Now it appears the Google Maps app for Android has been updated to include support for Android Wear, too.

The Google Maps version 8.1.1 has been made available for download from the Google Play Store and apart the Android Wear addition, it also contains a number of bug fixes.

Therefore, people picking up these new smartwatches will be able to issue commands in Google Maps, only after installing the latest version of the app, because the previous one does not offer compatibility with Android Wear.

Users have to download the app from the Play Store and install it on their smartphone or tablet. The Android Wear component of the new Google Maps will be automatically sent over to the wearable, where it will also be kept up to date.

This is quite good news for Google Maps fans and it’s certainly encouraging to see Google has already started rolling out Android Wear-supported apps.

The LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live are currently up for pre-order in the Google Play store for $229 / €168 and $199 / €95 respectively.
