One of the most popular navigation applications for mobile devices, Google Maps has just received a major update on both Android and iOS platforms.

Before we go into details, please keep in mind that some of the new features added by Google in this update are only available in certain countries. However, we will mention where exactly a certain service or feature is available when the need arises.

But first things first. Google has just bumped Maps app to version 8.0, which is a major increment, thus we should expect pretty important changes to be included in this update.

The first thing that users will notice after applying the update is the fact that turn-by-turn navigation, one of the most used features of Maps, now displays distance, arrival time, and quick access to alternate routes.

The next improvement included in this update is aimed at those who don't have a reliable Internet connection or can't afford one. According to Google, with the latest version of Maps, users will be able to save and manage offline maps in a custom list, which comes in handy when you travel or have a slow connection.

Next in line is a new option that allows users who sign in to see their “Places to review” list from recently saved or searched-for places.

The update also allows transit results to display total walking time of user's trip and the next scheduled bus or train. For those who also have Uber app installed on their Android devices, Google made it possible to open it right from Maps when comparing route options.

Furthermore, users can now adjust and name offline maps before saving, but they can also take advantage of the new search filters (price rating, open, from circles).

As mentioned earlier, Google has introduced a few features that will only work in a few countries. In this case, the lane guidance in navigation mode is only available in the United States, as well as parts of Canada and Japan.

Last but not least, some bug fixes and small under the hood improvements have been added as well, but no additional details on any of these have been provided.

You can now download Google Maps for Android 8.0 for free via Google Play Store. Keep in mind that the application should be fully compatible with most devices powered by Android 2.2 and up. Some features may only work in certain regions though.
