Google has just announced the release of a new version of its Google Maps for mobile phones running under Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system or under Nokia's Symbian platform, namely Google Maps 3.3. One of the main features of the new version is the possibility to better synchronize the handset with a desktop computer, something that applies mainly to starred places.

Google Maps for mobile has long allowed you to add stars on a map to mark your favorite places. You may have noticed a few months ago that Google Maps for desktop browsers introduced the ability to star places as well. Unfortunately, there was no way to keep these starred places in sync with Google Maps on your phone. With today's release of Google Maps for mobile 3.3 on Windows Mobile and Symbian phones, you'll now be able to keep the starred places on your phone and on your computer completely synchronized,” a post on Google Mobile Blog shows.

One thing that should be noted here is that those of you who will upgrade to the new version from an older iteration of Google Maps for mobile will be asked at login whether you would like to perform a synchronization of existing starred items with your Google Account. Basically, this feature enables any user to preserve the customizations made to a map on the mobile phone, while also having it available on Google Maps on the desktop browser.

At the same time, Flavio Lerda notes in the blog post that starring places is also a great feature that users will be able to fully enjoy while on the go. Moreover, they will have the items starred both on the handset and on the desktop browser. While Windows Mobile and Symbian users can already enjoy the new functionality, it seems that other mobile operating systems will also receive an update for the Google Maps app in the near future.
