Google has released the first update to its Maps iOS application months after the app's debut in the iTunes App Store as a third-party mapping solution for iPhone users.

This is the first incremental update since Google Maps’ December 2012 debut as a standalone, native application for small-screen iOS devices (yes, an iPad-native version is yet to be made available).

Google Maps 1.1 lets you search your Google Contacts. Simply sign in to have your saved addresses pop up whenever you’re looking for people by name.

Another new feature is the added ability to quickly search for local places by selecting popular categories within the app. These include restaurants, bars, cafes, gas stations, and other stuff, says Google.

Lastly, for those having a hard time converting miles into kilometers using their own gray matter, Google Maps 1.1 now lets users choose between Kilometers or Miles for their preferred distance units.

Google asks customers to note that some of these features “may not be available in all countries.”
