Google Launches New Quantum Computing Research Program

Google is having a research team join the company to lead the project

Google always has ambitious plans and this one that was just announced isn’t much different. A research team led by physicist John Martinis from the University of California Santa Barbara will be joining Google to help start a project to build new quantum information processors based on superconducting electronics. 

“John and his group have made great strides in building superconducting quantum electronic components of very high fidelity. He recently was awarded the London Prize recognizing him for his pioneering advances in quantum control and quantum information processing,” reads the announcement on the Google Research blog.

The company says that, with an integrated hardware group, the Quantum AI team will now be able to implement and test new designs for quantum optimization and inference processors based on recent theoretical insights, as well as the information Google obtained from the D-Wave quantum annealing architecture.

This doesn’t mean that the collaboration with D-Wave scientist will stop, Google says. Experiments with the “Vesuvius” machine at NASA Ames will continue as an upgrade is on the way.

Google has been moving away from simply focusing on web solutions for a while now. The company has been working on self-driving cars and robots and has been quite focused on artificial intelligence in the past few years, which also reflects in the many acquisitions Google has made in these domains.

Earlier this year, the company acquired DeepMind, a company specialized in artificial intelligence.
