Google has confirmed the media’s expectations in releasing a brand new Gmail app for iOS customers but, unfortunately, the app also got pulled because of a bug affecting push notifications. The search giant promises to deliver an updated version ASAP.

Confirming the release of the new app on its mobile blog yesterday, Google said “We’ve combined your favorite features from the Gmail mobile web app and iOS into one app so you can be more productive on the go. It’s designed to be fast, efficient and take full advantage of the touchscreen and notification capabilities of your device. And it’s one more reason to switch to Gmail.”

In usual manner, the post details the various features users can expect from the service, including a touch-optimized interface, push notifications and sound alerts, inbox-wide search, split-view for iPad users, a Priority Inbox, organizing features, and lots more stuff.

“We hope the Gmail app makes checking email on the go a little easier,” the company said, confirming that it will work on all devices that support iOS 4+.

Hours later, an update to that same blog entry read:

“Update: 11/2/11: Earlier today we launched a new Gmail app for iOS. Unfortunately, it contained a bug which broke notifications and caused users to see an error message when first opening the app. We’ve removed the app while we correct the problem, and we’re working to bring you a new version soon. Everyone who’s already installed the app can continue to use it.”

Google probably already has a binary ready for submission, so the ball should be in Apple’s court. Depending on how smooth the review process goes, the updated Gmail app should arrive no later than Sunday, or early next week.
