Launched a year ago, the Google Docs Web Clipboard enables users to copy formatted content from one editor to another across computers. The feature can prove really useful in some cases and Google is now expanding its functionality with the launch of the Web Clipboard extension for Google Chrome. Essentially, it replicates the functionality of the Web Clipboard feature from Docs across the browser.

"The Web Clipboard extension for Google Docs is now available in the Chrome extension gallery. It allows you to copy and paste text and images from the web into the cloud using the Google Docs clipboard," Stephen Amar, Support Engineer at Google, writes.

"This means that all the web content that you copy and paste is stored in your online clipboard so you can access it quickly and easily across multiple browser windows. You can even copy multiple items at a time," he adds.

Grabbing the Web Clipboard extension is as easy as visiting the Chrome extension gallery or the Web Store, they're essentially the same thing, and clicking install.

This will add a "Copy selection to web clipboard" entry to the right click menu on selected items. It enables users to copy text and formatted HTML and paste it anywhere in the browser, in input fields or in Docs, of course.

The extension also enables users to access items they've copied previously in Docs. The Web Clipboard extension for Chrome makes use of the browser's sync feature to allow users to access copied items on any browser synced to their account.

One of the advantages of the Web Clipboard, apart from the Docs tie-in, is its ability to copy HTML content and not lose the formatting. At the same time, you can copy unformatted text from HTML pages to input boxes.
