Allowing employees to bring their phones to work

Unsurprisingly, Google has launched Android for Work, an environment that is meant to allow employees to bring their smartphones and/or tablets to work.

The new Android for Work program has been created with a group of partners like BlackBerry, to help business customers bring more devices to work without having to fear of lacking security.

Android for Work is based on four important technology components, which are highlighted by Google in a blog post. First of all, the program includes something called “work profiles,” which refers to the built-in encryption, enhanced SELinux security enforcement and multi-user support in Android 5.0 Lollipop.

This is meant to create a dedicated work profile, which is supposed to protect work data. However, users will be able to take advantage of their personal apps because the work data will be managed by the employer who won't be able to view or erase their personal content.

“Android for Work app” is another key point in this program and is compatible with devices powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and KitKat, as well as those that don't run work profiles natively.

The application is meant to offer secure mail, calendar, contacts, documents, browsing and access to approved work apps. Android for Work app can be managed by IT.

“Google Play for Work” enables business customers to deploy as well as manage apps across all users running this Android for Work program.

Last but not least, Android for Work also promises “built-in productivity tools” for everyday business tasks.

Google claims it has created a range of business apps for email, contacts and calendar, which support both Exchange and Notes. They also provide document editing capabilities for documents, spreadsheets and presentations.

“Together with a wide range of management, application and device makers, we believe the Android for Work program provides businesses and workers with the choice and flexibility they need to get things done at work,” concludes Google.
