After Google mistakenly made public a webpage, a heap of rumors and assumptions surfaced, discussing the launch of an online classified service that Google is preparing.
The service is called Google Base and it was accessible at http://base.google.com.
A description of the service reads: " Google's database into which you can add all
types of content. We'll host your content and make it searchable online for free."
One possibility of displaying personal ads as search results would be filtering information from all areas according to relevance and displaying the best results on the right side of the Google webpage, next to the company's sponsored ad links.
Should Google launch such a classified ad service, both newspapers and online classified services such as eBay and Craig's List will have a very serious competitor to look out for.
Google Base was discovered on Monday by a British programmer, Tony Ruscoe, who said he had created an automatic program to search for subdomains accessible at the Google.com Web site.
Shortly after the word came out, Google took down that test site and replaced it with a "403" forbidden access webpage.
