Hardly a week passes that Google doesn't sport a new doodle to replace its, very well known, logo on the homepage. It employs a team of artists to create doodles for all sorts of celebrations and commemorations. The doodles have become a fixture on the site and for a few years Google has also been running the Doodle 4 Google competition for children with an inclination for drawing to have their doodles featured on the Google homepage. Now Google is announcing the latest competition is about to start and it is starting to take submissions.

"[W]e're excited to announce our third annual Doodle 4 Google contest in the U.S. Google doodles, created by our talented team of doodlers, have helped us celebrate events and anniversaries from Van Gogh's birthday to Valentine's Day. And since 2008, Doodle 4 Google has given K-12 kids the opportunity to create their own logo and have it displayed on the Google homepage for hundreds of millions of users to enjoy for a day," Marissa Mayer, VP of search and user experience at Google wrote.

This year, Google chose the "If Could Do Anything, I Would..." theme encouraging children to let loose their imagination and dream up their perfect world. It's the third time Google is holding the competition in the US and since it first launched it expanded it to other countries as well.

Submissions have to come in by March 31, 2010, and is only opened for students from registered schools. Google is encouraging schools to submit as many doodles as possible and will give the Technology Booster award to the top eight schools in terms of submissions. The 40 finalists in the competition will have their works displayed at the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. The winner will get a $15,000 college scholarship, a laptop and a $25,000 donation for the school and, of course, the winning doodle will be hosted on May 27, 2010, by Google. Let's hope it goes smoother than it did in Australia.
