The issue seems to be limited to some network operators

Android 5.0 Lollipop launch hasn’t been uneventful. Since the new version of the operating system was released to more smartphones and tablets, many users have reported various bugs that have started to affect their devices after installing the Lollipop update.

For example, the camera in the Nexus 4 and 5 stops working if you leave the flashlight open until it turns off by itself. The missing Silent Mode is another issue that all those who received Android 5.0 Lollipop on their devices have been affected by.

Unfortunately, the bad news doesn’t stop here, at least for some of those who have gotten the Lollipop upgrade in select regions. Several Dutch Nexus 4 and 5 users have been hit by a nasty bug that break SMS messaging on their smartphones.

The issue seems to affect only carriers in a few countries like the Netherlands, India, Belgium, the United States. According to the log entry in the Issue Tracker, those who upgraded to Android 5.0 Lollipop can’t send SMS message through either Hangouts or default messaging app.

This isn’t something that happens randomly from time to time. The issue seems to affect all Nexus 4 and 5 devices that are registered on particular carriers 100% of the time, which means once you update to Lollipop, you won’t be able to send SMSs anymore.

Dutch blog Tweakers received an official answer from Google on the matter of the SMS bug affecting these devices, which seems to be serious enough to make the search giant halt the rollout of the update and the launch of the Nexus 6 in the Netherlands.

“We have discovered a software bug in Android 5.0 Lollipop which ensures that Vodafone customers can not send text messages International in the Netherlands. This bug affects the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, but the Nexus 6. We have therefore decided not to introduce the Nexus 6 and Lollipop in the Netherlands until the problem is corrected. “

Basically, all Nexus smartphones that run Android 5.0 Lollipop seem to be affected by this issue, though the problem does look to come from carriers’ part.

As of today, the issue hasn’t been fixed yet, but we suspect addressing this SMS bug will take more time than usual given the fact that carriers are involved in the problem as well.

The good news is the issue does not affect Nexus 4, 5 and 6 devices across the globe, so here is hoping Google will find a solution to fix the bug in the countries mentioned earlier.
