Sochi, a Russian city situated in Krasnodar Krai, was elected as the town to held the 2014 Winter Olympics. The decision announced on July 4, 2007 congratulated the Russian city in the detriment of Pyeongchang County, a South Korean region that also competed for being the host of the Winter Olympics. Because the Mountain View company celebrates every important event for certain countries, Google placed a special logo on the Russian homepage showing its gratitude for the upcoming Olympic Games.

According to Wikipedia, Sochi "sprawls along the shores of the Black Sea against the background of the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus Mountains. At 145 km (90 mi), Greater Sochi is claimed to be the longest city in Europe. As of the 2002 Census, it had a population of 328,809, down from 336,514 recorded in the 1989 Census. The city has been selected to host the XXII Olympic Winter Games in 2014."

Every once in a while, the Mountain View giant replaces the official logo of the company with new ones to celebrate special events. It all started in 1999 when Larry Page and Sergey Brin designed their own photo to play the role of the official Google logo. However, the concept was improved a lot and the main image appearing on the local Google versions is replaced with special-created photos to celebrate the events or honor certain persons.

"We have a variety of logos commemorating holidays and events. We've put them in this online museum for your amusement. Please do not use them elsewhere. And please, don't feed the kangaroo. If you would like to include a link to Google on your site, please use one of our official logo sticker," Google describes the doodles that play the role of the company's image.

If you want to view the entire collection of the Google doodles, you can find them on a separate page hosted by the search giant.
