As Apple is instructing e-reading fans to update their iBooks to fix a crashing bug, Google is also offering a new version of its e-book software, adding iOS 6 improvements and a customized layout for the latest Apple gear.

Much like Apple’s own iBooks, Google Play Books provides a convenient iOS reading experience with the ability to take your favorite titles on the go, customize your reading experience, and buy new books on the go through Google Play (via a web browser).

A new version of Google Play Books is out with “better support for iOS 6,” a brand new interface for the iPhone 5 and the 5th generation of iPod touch, a number of stability improvements, and better integration with VoiceOver (Apple’s voice-powered assistive function).

Google Play Books 1.4.2 is a free download from Apple’s App Store. Compatible devices include all iPhones, iPads and iPod touch players capable of running iOS 5.
