Google says it doesn't have any such plans at the moment

Google denies that is has any type of plans to expand its Fiber gigabit Internet service in the United Kingdom, despite rumors hinting at this possibility.

Considering the fact that Google is barely making its way through a few cities within the United States, and even in these places it is slowly building up its infrastructure and covering only several neighborhoods, chances were low in the first place that the rumors were true.

In fact, Engadget reports that Google has formally denied things. “We have informal conversations with other telecom companies all the time. But we’ve never had any serious planning discussions about bringing Google Fiber to Britain,” Google said.

The original story was run by The Telegraph who quoted unnamed sources saying that the Internet giant was in talks with a company called CityFibre about extending Fiber to the UK.

“Google historically have always publicly said they would never build fiber outside the US. But in the background they are talking to people here in the UK and looking at projects,” one of the sources is quoted as saying.

The move wouldn’t just make Google a serious player against other Internet Service Providers who only offer a small part of the speed that Google’s network is capable of, but it would also help users in the United Kingdom access much better service than the currently available offers.

Alas, it doesn’t seem to be within Google’s immediate plans to cross the Ocean into Europe to deliver its ultra high-speed Internet. The company does plan, however, to extend the project into some 34 American cities, which is an ambitious goal considering there are only three cities currently on its list: Austin (Texas), Kansas City (Kansas) and Provo (Utah).

The infrastructure Google is building allows users to access Internet at 1,000 megabits per second, at least ten times higher than what most other networks deliver on average in the United States and in the United Kingdom. On top of this, Google also provides high-definition television over its network and even plans to introduce 4K support within the network.

The company offers several subscription packages in the United States – one that includes Gigabit Internet alone and one that also includes access to the TV network. There’s also the option to pay a one-time fee and get access to free Internet for the rest of your life. The bandwidth, however, is limited to what Google sees as “basic speeds,” namely up to 5 Mbps download and 1 Mpbs upload speeds.
